Like a million other high school students, I had to read Henry David Thoreau's "Walden" in either 10th or 11th grade. I've probably read it twenty times since then. It's not hyperbole for me to say that Thoreau's philosophy of life changed my outlook forever. I thought it was the greatest book ever, and still do. As a resident of Massachusetts, I was able to visit Walden Pond and walk through the same woods where Thoreau lived from 1845 to 1847, and from where he shared his experiences over those two years, living alone in a tiny cabin. 176 years later and his spirit is still felt in those woods.
