Utagawa Hiroshige was a grand-master at the art of Ukiyo-e. For anyone that may not be familiar with the term, Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings depicting daily life in Japan and other culturaly significant subjects such as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales along with travel scenes and at times, landscapes. Hiroshige however was a-typical of the era, focusing the majority of his work on landcape pieces. It is hard to believe, with the complexity that goes into creating a single woodblock print, that this amazing artist created over 8000 prints during his lifetime.
