ABOUT THE PHOTO: There isn't much history available for Bennie's Grocery Store, other than the fact that it was located in Savanah Georgia. The store sign shows that it was located on West Gwinnett Street which according to one historian, was located in the segregated west side of Savannah.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: A few years back I discovered this photograph and the work of its Photographer Marion Post Wolcott, and became fascinated with her work. Wolcott worked as a Photographer for the Farm Security Agency which was formed in 1937. The agency was a federal body that provided salaries for photographers who traveled the United States making an historical document of America during the difficult times of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Wolcott worked for the FSA from 1938 until 1942 creating an enormous portfolio which is now a part of the Library of Congress and as such are now part of the Public Domain.
