By almost any standard, William H. Johnson can be considered a major American artist. His art captured the history of Black Americans and he focused on painting what life was like in 1930's and 1940's. This particular painting is my favorite of all of his work. This was done in 1941 and depicts a street scene from Harlem where Johnson lived and worked for a period of time in the 1940's.
Several of his works are displayed in the Smithsonian. The images used for these designs are now in Public Domain.
