ABOUT THE PHOTO: The Will Rogers Motor Court was built in the early 1940's in Tulsa Oklahoma along historic Route 66. This iconic sign was added in 1951. The motel had 36 rooms with all of the amenities. A swimming pool was added in 1958 along with several more rooms to handle the increased traffic. The office switchboard was not only connected to each room, but also to McCollum's Restaurant located next door. The local diner provided room service for their guests. Business began to decline after a highway bypass changed the traffic pattern and the motel was sold in 1977 and converted to storage facility. Sadly, it was demolished a few years later.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Photographer Carol M. Highsmith has been called "America's Photographer" and for good reason. Highsmith has been visually documenting late-20th and early-21st century America on behalf of the Library of Congress for 25 years and she has made it her life's work to document life in all 50 of the United States. Her work is available through the Library of Congress and at current count, consists of over 42,000 images.
