The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was held in California on December 6, 1969 in what people at the time thought would be "Woodstock West". The Woodstock festival had taken place just a few months earlier so expectations for Altamont were high. Over 300,000 attended the show but sadly it didn't come close to the peace and love vibes of Woodstock. On the contrary, the inexcusable decision to hire Hells Angels as concert security proved disastrous as the festival was marred with violence throughout the show. One attendee was stabbed to death in an encounter with Hells Angels and there were two other accidental deaths during the festival. Score of people were injured, several vehicles stolen and several arrests were made.
As for the music, the show included performances from Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Flying Burrito Brothers Crosby Still and Nash, with the Rolling Stones as the headliner finishing the show. The Grateful Dead had originally planned to appear and were scheduled to perform after CSNY and before the Rolling Stones, but after witnessing the violence of the event, they withdrew from the festival.
