I created this poster to commemorate one of the greatest nights I've ever had at a show. I saw Rick Danko at the Old Vienna Kaffeehause in Westborough Mass back in 1988. At the time, I'd never been to this venue but had heard from friends that it is similar to another local venue that we'd frequent called the Iron Horse in Northampton Mass. The Iron Horse is one of those venues where you're pretty much guaranteed to be able to meet the artists after the show so I'd always throw an album in my backpack and have it at the show just in case. 99% of the time, I'd leave with a signed record. In any case, before heading out to the Old Vienna that night, just to play it safe, I stuck my copy of the first Rick Danko solo album in my bag and I'm so glad I did.
I got to this show so early (Rick is one of my Rock-Gods so I had to get there the minute the doors opened). We sat at the first table right next to the stage and I had the album sitting out in plain view when Rick came out onstage. After a few songs, he noticed the record out on the table and asked me if I wanted him to sign it. He literally walked to my table (I was about 2 feet from the stage) and signed it right then. He also drew a huge smiley face on the front cover right under his name. I was hoping to find him after the show to ask him to sign, and needless to stay, I was stunned that he walked over to my table, guitar and all. One of the greatest experiences of my life.
At the end of the show, it took me an hour to get out of the club since so many people stopped me and wanted to see the signed record and most of them were jealous that they didn't think to bring something for Rick to sigh. I have this autographed record framed on my wall and it is among my most prized possessions. Rick was one of the all time greats and he left us way too soon.
The size of this concert poster is 11x17 inches.
