When I was 20 years old, I was trying to get a job in radio and the first job I got was at a tiny little 5000 watt Country music station called WIXY 1600AM. This was in the early 80's. At that time I knew nothing about Country music and all I knew was the pop-crossover stuff like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton which just didn't do anything for me. So I thought I hated Country Music but I knew just enough about it from working in the records shops I'd been in up to that time, so that I was able to fake my way through the interview and get the job. Once there...a whole new world opened for me. I got exposed to Willie, Waylon, Johhny Cash, Hank Sr. and of course...Merle Haggard. I hadn't paid any attention to any of these artists up to that point but then I heard Merle's "Workin' Man Blues" and never looked back.
