The original Cavern Club opened as a Jazz club in 1957 but before the end of the fifties, it had already become a rock club, most famously known for its history as a home club for The Beatles, who played regularly at The Cavern. The club closed in 1973 and it's underground club and stage were entoumed under a parking lot. In 1981, plans to excavate the original club were scrapped after it was determined that there was too much structural damage.
The Cavern Club now sits at a 90 degree angle to the original and covers 70% of the original Cavern footprint, the stage is not far from the original location, and the 'Live Lounge' is an exact replica of the original, using as many of the old bricks that were excavated from the original club as possible.
