Black Swan Records is one of the most important and historic record labels in the history of music.  Black Swan was founded in 1921 in Harlem New York and was the first African-American owned record label and the first to produce and market music specifically to a black audience.

Black Swan gave black artists opportunities to record that weren't widely available with other labels.   They were moderately successful early on by marketing their music to black audiences, an audience that was all but ignored by the major labels.  

As Black Swan continued to build their label, their early success caught the attention of larger labels such as Columbia Records and Paramount Records, who realized their was a demand for black artists prompting them to begin competing with Black Swan.

While this competition for black music and the black audience helped African American musicians grow in the industry, it was the beginning of the end for Black Swan Records, as they couldn't compete with Columbia and Paramount, and folded the label in 1923.   Paramount Records bought the Black Swan catalog in 1924.

Although the label had a short career, its importance in the history of recorded music can not be overstated.
