This painting features a beautiful antique barn located in Granby Massachusetts. Granby is a small rural, agricultural town located in Western Massachusetts. This barn is part of Red Fire Farm, a very large organic farm serving customers across New England. I'd been meaning to sketch this barn for years. This barn is actually a massive structure which is difficult to see in the painting. It was built in 1922 to house cows and store hay but it is now used as a farm-stand and a storage/processing facility for organic produce.
The original barn that stood in this same footprint was destroyed by fire after a lightning strike and this barn was built in its place. When the current owner purchased the farm in 2000, he gave it the name Red Fire Farm as a nod to the properties history, and also for a variety of lettuce that bears the same name.
