ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH: Not too much is known about this photograph other than it was taken in June of 1940 by FSA Photographer Marion Post Wolcott. It was taken in the town of Belle Glade, Florida which was home to the Osceola Migratory Agricultural Labor Camp which the FSA created a year earlier. This photograph is believed to be workers from the camp visiting the local town. I love the old jalopy they're driving. With the words "The Boogie Woogie" on the side of the car and "The Yellow Bullet" on the back, these were clearly the hipsters in their day.
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: A few years back I discovered the work of Photographer Marion Post Wolcott and became fascinated with her work. Wolcott worked as a Photographer for the Farm Security Agency which was formed in 1937. The agency was a federal body that provided salaries for photographers who traveled the United States making an historical document of America during the difficult times of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Wolcott worked for the FSA from 1938 until 1942 creating an enormous body of work. Wolcott's work is now in the Public Domain.
