ABOUT THE PHOTO: The Hackberry General Store is an iconic site along Route 66, located in Hackberry Arizona. The store was originally opened in 1934 to provide goods to the community of Hackberry which was a growing community at that time, located just across the railroad tracks. The only alternative to the locals was to travel hours to Kingman Arizona so the Hackberry General Store was extremely popular and was in business until 1979. The property sat abandoned until it was purchased and reopened as a tourist attraction in 1992

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Photographer Carol M. Highsmith has been called "America's Photographer" and for good reason. Highsmith has been visually documenting late-20th and early-21st century America on behalf of the Library of Congress for 25 years and she has made it her life's work to document life in all 50 of the United States. Her work is available through the Library of Congress and at current count, consists of over 42,000 images.
