No one ever seems to believe me when I tell them I was at this show. If you're not familiar with Dylan's Toad's Place appearance, it has become one of the most historic and legendary shows of Dylan's entire career.
This is how the New Haven Register described it:
"In the midst of his Never Ending Tour, which has continued through today, Dylan was playing upwards of 90 shows a year....at the turn of the decade, Dylan did something he hadn't done in years -- played a club gig to roughly 700 people. The four-hour show, which spanned 50 songs over four sets of music is often regarded as Dylan's magnum opus of live performing. Described as "chatty" that evening, during the New Haven show, Dylan abandoned most of the song that had launched his popularity such as "Knockin on Heaven's Door and "It Aint Me Babe and instead chose to dig deep into his catalogue while offering rare covers including one of Bruce Springsteens "Dancing in the Dark". "
I was working at a radio station in Hartford at the time (the now defunct WCCC 107 FM) and our program director was able to secure just 2 tickets for this show, and since I had the reputation of being the biggest Dylan fan in the building, he was gracious enough to offer them to me. I have seen Bob Dylan approximately 20 times over the past 40 or so years and it is true, that this Toad's Place appearance is likely his magnum opus of live music.
